The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form the government in Assam for a third consecutive term, having won 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

The Congress won 19 seats and its ally, the Raijor Dal, two.

Polling in the Assembly elections was held on April 9.

Several exit polls had predicted that the BJP would win the elections.

In 2021, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance retained power with 75 seats. While Sarbananda Sonowal was the chief minister during the NDA’s first term between 2016 and 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma had taken over the position after the election.

The voter turnout in Assam was 85.9%, the highest ever in the state. In the 2021 polls, the state had recorded a turnout of 82%.

The Election Commission did not conduct a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Assam, unlike in 12 other states and Union Territories. Instead, in November, it directed the state’s chief electoral officer to conduct a “special revision” of the electoral rolls, which was similar to the usual updates to the electoral roll.

Door-to-door verification took place between November 22 and December 20. This process did not involve document verification, unlike the special intensive revision.

In the draft voter list published on December 27, the names of more than 10 lakh voters had been deleted. Of these, 4.7 lakh names had been removed because of deaths and more than 5.2 lakh voters were identified to have shifted from their registered locations. There were 2.5 crore voters in the state, according to the draft list.

The citizens whose names had been excluded from the draft rolls could file their claims and objections till January 22.

The final list released on February 10 showed that Assam had 2.4 crore voters, which was a 0.9% decrease compared to the draft roll.
